BLM: Of all the books you’ve written, what would you say is your best work to date?
VH: It’s really hard to choose! I always put my best into every story I write, so I really feel that they all are my best. If you’re going to twist my arm, I’d say that The D-Cup Divas Series, because it forced me to push myself into styles of writing I wasn’t quite used to.
BLM: Your novel D-Cup Divas seemed to take on a life of it’s own. Was the success with this book expected or were you surprised at the attention it received?
VH:Well, since I am super-critical of myself, I was very surprised at all the love I got when the books released. I’m still really touched and appreciative when someone gives me a compliment or tells me how much they loved the books. Hopefully, that will remain the same as I move forward.
BLM: You’ve travel all over doing book signings. What city would you say have shown you to most love?
VH: Definitely my hometown, Washington DC! I have had people drive long distances to come see me at my signings and that always blows me away. I’ve had old friends show up, and the bookstores are always open to me coming in pretty much whenever I want; it’s been awesome!
BLM: You also design book covers and websites. How did you get involved in this side of the industry?
VH: I have always loved tinkering around with graphics and pictures, so in 2003, I decided to go to school for it. I wanted to create my own book covers for my books, so I was my first client. Once my first book was out I had people asking who the designer was and the rest is history. I guess its part of that whole right brain thing.
BLM: If you could give aspiring authors any advice about the industry what would it be?
VH: Think before you act and read before you sign! There are authors out there that are so hungry and eager to be published that they end up taking the first contract that come their way even if the terms are horrible. Just like there are super publishers out there that are honest and give you what is fair, there are others that are dirty, conniving and will throw pennies at you for your hard work. If the terms of that contract don’t feel right…don’t sign it!
BLM: Have you made any mistakes in this business and what’s been the best decision you’ve made?
Of course! Mistakes are what help you grow and learn! Luckily they have all been minor ones that didn’t have any major effects on my career. I can truly say my best decision has been deciding to sign with my publisher. It has truly been a very rewarding experience, both on the friendship level and definitely on a professional level.
BLM: Which would you say is better and why? Print on Demand, self-publishing, or traditional publishing?
I have tried all three and the best one for me is traditional publishing. It frees up the financial side for me so that I can focus more on marketing and exposure. Now, I know that for a lot of folks that’s not an option right now, so I will go with self-publishing. Print on Demand is a bit of a scam to me. You get paid pennies on the dollar AND they keep the right to your books for like 7 years. Umm…yeah right!!
BLM: If you could write a book with any author whom would you choose and why?
If had to pick just one, I would say KiKi Swinson. I just like her style of writing. Gritty and sexy.
BLM: In the literary industry authors having issues with each other is an every day occurrence. How have you managed to keep your nose clean and stay out mud throwing?
I guess I approach dealing with other authors the same way I deal with people in my regular life…you respect me, and I’ll respect you. It’s just a fact of treating others the way I would want to be treated.
